Nuclear collapse looms? Fukushima No. 4 reactor 'leaning' A small group of evacuees have briefly been allowed inside the exclusion zone around Japan's damaged Fukushima nuclear plant. For the first time, the government gave permission for short visits so people could gather belongings and check on their properties. Meanwhile, a recent map of contamination released by Japan shows high levels of radiation well outside the evacuation zone. Dr Robert Jacobs can help shed more light on this. He's a Research Associate Professor of Nuclear History and Culture at the Hiroshima Peace Institute. (Russia Today)
Chernobyl in the US? Though it has been 25 years since the Chernobyl disaster, has much changed in terms of safety when it comes to nuclear plants? The facilities at Fukushima were said to be an improvement from Chernobyl, so as the US turns toward building new plants in Texas, how weary should Americans be? Investigative journalist Greg Palast says the alternative to nuclear power are safer and cheaper and that Americans shouldn't be quick to think that a disaster won't happen on their own turf. CIA officer: US depended on tyrannies The United State’s intervention in Libya has been called a humanitarian effort by officials, but the true intentions of the American government can be not-so-easily explained by examining the country’s actions overseas.
“The best thing for the United States is to back away and let the cards fall where they may,” says Michael Scheuer. "If Israel disappears, if Palestine disappears…who cares?" A former intelligence officer with the CIA who, like many, insists that the US’ intervention in Libya isn’t doing any good for anyone. Despite America’s insistence that their involvement in the Middle East is for the better of the citizen’s of Libya, the United States is only accentuating its reputation as the bad guy, says Scheuer.
“We’re just trying to fool the Muslim world…but the Muslim world is much smarter than that,” says Scheuer, who has written extensively on Islam and America’s relation with Muslim countries. Scheuer says that the United States is known for attacking countries that have oil and that their involvement in Libya is being enacted to serve America, not the Middle East. This, the author says, only confirms what Osama Bin Laden has always inferred about America. (Russia Today)
Nuclear Alert: Fears of 3rd explosion at Japan's Fukushima as cooling fails There are new threats and warnings coming from Japan with reports of a possible third explosion on the way at the Fukoshima nuclear plant. This follows Monday's second blast there which injured 11 people. Japanese officials have been reassuring locals that radiation levels at the plant are within legal limits. RT talks to Dr. Robert Jacobs from the Hiroshima Peace Institute with more on what the threat of radioactive contamination means for Japan's people and infrastructure.
"There's never been a case where the information has been accurate and useful. So there's no reason to believe that the government is now not engaged in trying to manage public opinion and manage perceptions that this crisis is not so bad. And perhaps that's accurate but we won't know for a while" (Russia Today)
Hillary Clinton: US Losing Information War to Alternative Media The US is losing the global information war, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton declared while appearing before a congressional committee to ask for extra funds to spread US propaganda through new media.
Clinton said existing private channels are not good enough to handle the job, naming as rivals Al Jazeera, China's CCTV and RT -- which she watches, she added.
Clinton was defending her department's budget in front of the House's Committee on Foreign Affairs on Wednesday.
Clinton said the US should step up its propaganda effort and get back "in the game" of doing "what we do best." (Russia Today)
'Bilderberg Hand': Deadly chaos in Libya, Bahrain as Wave of Rage spreads Government buildings are reported to be on fire in the Libyan capital Tripoli as demonstrators demand an end to the 41-year rule of Colonel Gaddafi. The son of the Libyan leader blamed opposition groups and outsiders for instigating the protests. The army is reported to be using live ammunition against demonstrators, with international organisations putting the current death toll at over 200. In a televised national address Seif Al-Islam Gaddafi said this number was exaggerated, also dismissing reports that his father fled the country. Meanwhile the unrest continues to spread further through the region with protests in Yemen, Bahrain and Morocco. Regional expert Adrian Salbuchi says that global dominance groups are behind the wave of revolts. (Russia Today)
