Greece urged to give up euro THE Greek government has been advised by British economists to leave the euro and default on its €300 billion (£255 billion) debt to save its economy. The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), a London-based consultancy, has warned Greek ministers they will be unable to escape their debt trap without devaluing their own currency to boost exports. The only way this can happen is if Greece returns to its own currency. (London Times)
BP 'pressured rig disaster workers to drill faster' Safety problems also went unaddressed, according to Mike Williams, the chief electronics technician on the Deepwater Horizon, including damage to one of the rig’s most important pieces of safety equipment, the blowout preventer.
He claimed that the blowout preventer was then damaged when a crewman accidentally moved a joystick, applying hundreds of thousands of pounds of force. Pieces of rubber were found in the drilling fluid, which he said implied damage to a crucial seal. But a supervisor declared the find to be “not a big deal”, Mr Williams alleged. (London Times)

Goldman Sachs set to pay £3.5bn in bonuses Royal Bank of Scotland, which is 84% owned by the UK taxpayer, appears to have been one of the biggest losers from the alleged fraud. The bank is this weekend considering legal action against Goldman. The charges relate to a mortgage bond issued by the bank. The American regulators claim Goldman designed the bond so it would drop in value. Goldman Sachs last year paid £10 billion in bonuses. (London Times)
Professor Watson, who served as chairman of the IPCC from 1997-2002, said: “The mistakes all appear to have gone in the direction of making it seem like climate change is more serious by overstating the impact. In rhetoric which further raises the temperature in the Islamic Republic's stand-off with the West, an aide to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader, today emphasised that his country would not hesitate to spark off a regional war if any state tried to destroy its programme.
Israel has vowed to deny Iran any atomic technology which gives it bomb-making potential, and last month carried out a military exercise over Greece that was widely interpreted as a coded warning to Iran to halt its programme or face the consequences.
The comments today by Ali Shirazi, Ayatollah Khamenei’s representative to the Revolutionary Guard, will intensify the war of words between Iran and the West and increase fears of military confrontation, which has helped to boost world oil prices to record highs in recent weeks.
