North Korea's launch of a long-range Taepo Dong-2 missile is a direct challenge not just to the United States but to the international community's resolve to confront threats to regional stability. 4/22/2013  Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s Mom Spoke To Tamerlan Before Deadly MIT Shootout
The mother of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, spoke to her deceased elder son as the deadly standoff at MIT escalated Thursday night — and explains what her older child said before he died in a hail of bullets in a tense confrontation with police. Zubeidat Tsarnaev believes her sons are innocent and have been set up as culprits in the Boston Marathon bombings — last week, the distraught and grieving Zubeidat claimed that her elder son had a working relationship with the FBI. She said during an initial interview: “Being a mother, what I can say is that I am very sure, I am like 100 percent sure, that is is a setup. My two sons are really innocent, and I know that neither of them never, never has talked about whatever they are saying about [them] now … My son would never do this. It is a setup. He was controlled by FBI like for three, five years. They knew what my son was doing. [...] they were controlling every step of him.” Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died in the MIT shootout, and brother Dzhokhar, who was gravely injured, are accused of a horrific crime and a potential anti-US campaign of attack — but when listening to Zubeidat speak, it’s difficult not to identify to some small degree with the pain of a mother whose sons are at the center of the mayhem.

4/21/2013  'My sons have been framed' ~ mother of Boston bombers refuses to believe they were responsible for carnage
The mother of the Boston Marathon bombers spoke out yesterday to say her sons were innocent despite the dramatic two-day shoot-out and mahunt that had the world holding its breath. Zubeidat Tsarnaev claimed last night that her sons were framed after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured by a SWAT team following an hour-long gunfight from his hiding place inside a boat. She said: "I am like 100 per cent sure that this is a set-up. "My two sons are really innocent and I know that neither of them have never talked about whatever they're saying about now." The brothers killed a police officer on Thursday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then hijacked a car, leading police through the city in a car chase and and shoot-out in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was fatally wounded. But Zubeidat staunchly denied all of this: "He would never be on the side of Jihad. He would never do this. "My sons are innocent, it is impossible for them to do such things. I am really telling you this is a set-up."

1/16/2013  Culture and Agriculture ~ Sue Spaid looks at farming as art
Rirkrit Tiravanija’s “Untitled (bicycle shower),” one of the BMA’s new acquisitions, might seem a bit out of place in the formal halls of the museum. That’s because Tiravanija designed it to actually function as a shower for the land, an experimental art/farming/political compound he founded in Thailand in 1998. According to Sue Spaid’s new book Green Acres: Artists Farming Fields, Greenhouses and Abandoned Lots, it is becoming increasingly common to see such works at museums. The book accompanies a show at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, which will come to the area this summer, but Spaid will facilitate a conversation about art and farming at Red Emma’s on Friday, Jan. 18. Before Spaid came to Baltimore to take over the directorship of the Contemporary Museum in 2010—a position she held until the museum suspended operations and let her go last May—she worked as curator at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, where she co-curated Ecovention: Current Art to Transform Ecologies, which led, a decade later, to Green Acres.

1/16/2013  Militants Seize Americans and Other Hostages in Algeria
The French military assault on Islamist extremists in Mali escalated into a potentially much broader North African conflict on Wednesday when, in retribution, armed attackers in unmarked trucks seized an internationally managed natural gas field in neighboring Algeria and took at least 20 foreign hostages, including Americans. Algerian officials said at least two people, including a Briton, were killed in the assault, which began with a predawn ambush on a bus trying to ferry gas-field workers to an airport. Hundreds of Algerian security forces were sent to surround the gas-field compound, creating a tense standoff, and the country’s interior minister said there would be no negotiations. Algeria’s official news agency said at least 20 fighters had carried out the attack and mass abduction. There were unconfirmed reports late on Wednesday that the security forces had tried to storm the compound and had retreated under gunfire from the hostage takers.

1/15/2013  Make Your Own Products: 3D Printing Reaches Consumers
Adore your Shih Tzu? Now it’s possible to create a tiny replica of Fluffy in figurine form for your office. You could also create customized jewelry or an iPhone case. What might be called extreme personalization is moving closer to mainstream consumers who don't want to invest in an industrial 3D printer themselves. This is all thanks to a number of companies whose mission is to give everyone access to high-end 3D technology normally used by large corporations to create product prototypes. Using their services, you can go online to design and order custom products, whether you want to add your face in relief to a coffee mug or design your own iPhone case using intuitive 3D software. You simply download the free software on your computer, or in some cases even as an application for your phone, customize your product, and upload the digital file for the company to print. Or for more complicated projects, like creating a real-life action figure of your dog or yourself, you can visit a number of companies. Direct Dimensions, for instance, will do a full body scan – called a ShapeShot — for around a hundred dollars using a $60,000 handheld industrial video scanner to circle around you as it captures your 3D image. The company can then put together your digital file to print your real life action figure.

1/15/2013  The Filabot will revolutionise the home 3D-printing market
Got any spare Lego? Invention by American college student recycles plastic household scrap into 3D-printing material - DIY desktop 3D-printers may be taking off, with basic flatpack models available for as little as £250, but the printing material itself still has a hefty price tag. A 1kg spool of plastic filament – which is heated then squeezed out in layers like icing to create objects – costs around £50, keeping it in reach of only the most enthusiastic hobbyists. But the home-printing revolution may now be on its way, thanks to an invention by American college student Tyler McNaney. The Filabot brings a miniature industrial recycling plant to your desktop, grinding down everyday plastic waste and transforming it into ready-to-use printing material. Everything from water pipes to drinks bottles, plastic wrappers and Lego bricks can be fed into the contraption – which grinds, melts and extrudes the plastic into a filament of either 3mm or 1.75mm diameters. It can also melt down failed or broken 3D prints, allowing for increased trial and error, or the ability to upgrade redundant parts.

1/14/2013  Statement from Crisis Actors
We are outraged by Florida Atlantic University Professor James Tracy's deliberate promotion of rumor and innuendo to link Crisis Actors to the Sandy Hook shootings of December 14, 2012. We do not engage our actors in any real-world crisis events, and none of our performances may be presented at any time as a real-world event. James Tracy copied his material from blogs and YouTube channels that manufacture malicious rumors and false accusations. It is obvious to James Tracy and FAU that these sites pander to followers who need only rumor and innuendo to carry out a relentless hate attack against the Sandy Hook community as well as Crisis Actors. These followers' online campaign of threats and defamation continues to this day, and interferes with official investigations into the Newtown tragedy. How can James Tracy and the university shrug off any responsibility for the pain they are causing? Click to watch this hate attack in real time on Twitter.

1/2/2013  The San Antonio Theater Shooting the National Media Ignored
At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Sunday night, December 16, just two days after the horrific shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, Jesus Manuel Garcia, age 19, entered the China Garden restaurant across the mall from the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 theater complex in San Antonio, Texas, looking for his ex-girlfriend. Angered that she had just broken up with him, he sent her a text message saying that he planned to go to the restaurant where she worked and “shoot somebody.” Before she could warn patrons at the restaurant Garcia entered and started shooting. One bullet slightly wounded one patron while others scattered out the exit doors and headed for the safety of the theater lobby across the mall. Garcia chased them and continued shooting. This got the attention of an armed off-duty law-enforcement officer who was working at the theater, Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Castellano, who chased Garcia to the back of the theater where he ducked into the men’s room. When he emerged, Castellano shot him four times which immediately and effectively ended the threat. Garcia was handcuffed with the help of another off-duty officer and taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. He was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set at $1 million.
