7/3/2013  Talking train window adverts tested by Sky Deutschland
A German firm is proposing to transmit adverts via train windows so that the sound appears to "come from inside the user's head" when passengers lean against them. The idea would use bone conduction technology, a technique that transmits sound to the inner ear by passing vibrations through the skull. The concept has been developed by ad agency BBDO Germany on behalf of broadcaster Sky Deutschland. It is already proving controversial. Comments posted under a video showing off the concept include "This is a violation to a person's right to rest" and "I think I'd take a sledgehammer to the window."

6/28/2013  American Mayors: Let Them Smoke Pot
It has been more than seven months since voters in Colorado and Washington State chose to legalize marijuana for recreational use, in contravention of federal drug laws. It has been more than three months since Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he would announce his departments response to the new statutes relatively soon. So far: nothing. Mr. Holder has yet to indicate whether he will side with all nine former heads of the Drug Enforcement Administration, who published an open letter urging federal pre-emption. On Monday, the United States Conference of Mayors passed a resolution suggesting the opposite: that the Obama administration should let the states decide this issue for themselves. Despite the prohibition of marijuana, the resolution reads, and the 22 million marijuana arrests that have occurred in the United States since 1965, some 42 percent of Americans have used the drug.

6/25/2013  NSA takes surveillance fact sheets off website
Following a complaint from two senators, the National Security Agency has removed from its website two fact sheets designed to shed light on and defend a pair of surveillance programs. Users now trying to access the documents detailing surveillance under legal authorities known as Section 215 and Section 702 receive an error message when they try to load the fact sheets. On Monday, Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Mark Udall (D-Colo.) wrote to the head of the spy agency alleging that one of the documents was misleading and inaccurate. The senators claimed, without elaborating, that a fact sheet contains an inaccurate statement about how the section 702 authority has been interpreted by the U.S. government. NSA Director Gen. Keith Alexander responded to the two lawmakers Tuesday, and while he didn't admit inaccuracy, he said the documents could have been clearer. "After reviewing your letter, I agree that the fact sheet that the National Security Agency posted on its website on 18 June 2013 could have more precisely described the requirements for collection under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act," Alexander said in a letter of his own (posted here).

6/13/2013  Sanity prevails: US Supreme Court rules that human genes are not eligible for patent protection
In a unanimous ruling, the United States Supreme Court ruled today that human genes cannot be patented. The ruling invalidates the thousands of patents that have already been granted on human genes, including the patent by Myriad Genetics on the BRCA breast cancer genes which the company says no one else can research or even detect without paying it a royalty. Click here to read the complete ruling. "Myriad did not create anything," said Justice Clarence Thomas. "To be sure, it found an important and useful gene, but separating that gene from its surrounding genetic material is not an act of invention." Well, exactly. This point should have been obvious to the lower courts, too, but in today's world of corporate domination over seemingly everything, gene industry lawyers were able to argue that patent protection would somehow inspire more innovation and research. "The biotechnology industry had warned that an expansive ruling against Myriad could threaten billions of dollars of investment," wrote Reuters. But exactly the opposite is true. Gene patents restricted research and created medical monopolies that raised prices for consumers. Even USA Today seemingly gets this point, saying, "The decision represents a victory for cancer patients, researchers and geneticists who claimed that a single company's patent raised costs, restricted research and sometimes forced women to have breasts or ovaries removed without sufficient facts or second opinions."

6/12/2013  'The worst case of scientific censorship since the Catholic Church banned the works of Galileo': Scientists call for drugs to be legalised to allow proper study of their properties
The outlawing of drugs such as cannabis, MDMA and LSD amounts to the the worst case of scientific censorship since the Catholic Church banned the works of Copernicus and Galileo, the former Government drugs advisor Professor David Nutt has claimed. Professor Nutt, who was dismissed from the Home Offices advisory council on drugs in 2009 after clashing with ministers, said that UN conventions on drugs in the 1960s and 1970s have delayed the development of innovative treatments for PTSD and depression by 30 years and also set back research into areas of neuroscience such as consciousness. In a paper published today with two other scientists in the journal Nature Reviews Neuroscience, he said that drugs policy is being driven by politics, not science. Professor Nutt left the Home Officer in 2009 after suggesting that taking MDMA ecstasy was no more dangerous than horse-riding and that alcohol and tobacco were more dangerous than many illegal drugs.

6/10/2013  Majority Views NSA Phone Tracking as Acceptable Anti-terror Tactic -- Public Says Investigate Terrorism, Even If It Intrudes on Privacy Overview
A majority of Americans -- 56% -- say the National Security Agencys (NSA) program tracking the telephone records of millions of Americans is an acceptable way for the government to investigate terrorism, though a substantial minority -- 41% -- say it is unacceptable. And while the public is more evenly divided over the governments monitoring of email and other online activities to prevent possible terrorism, these views are largely unchanged since 2002, shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center and The Washington Post, conducted June 6-9 among 1,004 adults, finds no indications that last weeks revelations of the governments collection of phone records and internet data have altered fundamental public views about the tradeoff between investigating possible terrorism and protecting personal privacy. Currently 62% say it is more important for the federal government to investigate possible terrorist threats, even if that intrudes on personal privacy. Just 34% say it is more important for the government not to intrude on personal privacy, even if that limits its ability to investigate possible terrorist threats. These opinions have changed little since an ABC News/Washington Post survey in January 2006. Currently, there are only modest partisan differences in these opinions: 69% of Democrats say it is more important for the government to investigate terrorist threats, even at the expense of personal privacy, as do 62% of Republicans and 59% of independents.

6/10/2013  Why were roadblocks in St. Clair and Bibb counties asking for blood and DNA samples this weekend?
St. Clair and Bibb county authorities are confirming there were roadblocks at several locations in their counties Friday and Saturday asking for blood and DNA samples. However, the samples were voluntary and motorists were paid for them as part of a study, they said. According to Lt. Freddie Turrentine of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department, it isn't the first time such roadblocks have occurred in the area. "They were here in 2007," said Turrentine, the supervisor in charge of the roadblocks, which took place in several locations in St. Clair County Friday night, early Saturday morning and Saturday night and early Sunday morning. "It's just with social media and Facebook now, word of it has just exploded." Turrentine said the roadblocks were part of a study conducted by the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation, working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. St. Clair County was asked to participate by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs because it had worked with the group six years ago.

5/26/2013  Michael Hastings Rips Obama Drone Speech
Journalist Michael Hastings had very harsh words for President Barack Obama on Saturday morning. Appearing on MSNBC's "Up with Steve Kornacki," Hastings ripped Obama's recent foreign policy comments, saying the president had bought into the Bush administration's neoconservative worldview. On Thursday, Obama gave a major national security speech in which he defended the use of drone strikes as a key counterterrorism tool. Hastings said the speech marked a reversal in Obama's thinking. "If you compare this speech to the speech he gave in Cairo, in 2009 or his Nobel Prize speech, you see almost a total rejection of the civil rights tradition that President Obama supposedly came out of... and just an embrace of total militarism," Hastings said. "That speech to me was essentially agreeing with President Bush and Vice President Cheney that we're in this neo-conservative paradigm, that we're at war with a jihadist threat that actually is not a nuisance but the most important threat we're facing today," Hastings continued. You can read the full text of Obama's speech here, and watch a video of Hastings' remarks above.

5/21/2013  Peaceful Protester Tasered Outside DOJ While Demanding Wall Street Prosecutions (VIDEO)
Carmen Pittman had no intention of becoming an activist, but her bank, the Department of Justice and Occupy Atlanta turned her into one. Shortly before her grandmother died in 2011, the family realized that JPMorgan Chase was preparing to foreclose. HuffPost interviewed her late that year for a story on Occupy Atlanta and found a bewildered and desperate 21-year-old, talking about her childhood home in the past tense. "My every Christmas, my every Thanksgiving, my every birthday, my every dinner was in this house," Pittman said then of a home that had been in her family since 1953. "This was the base home. We could not stay away from this home. This home is my every memory." A year later, she won the house back from Chase. During the course of her fight, she was arrested for sitting on the floor of a local Chase branch and refusing to leave until the bank turned over the deed. On Tuesday, she was camped out in front of the Department of Justice in Washington, having been fully transformed into an activist by her experience, asking why more Pittmans have been arrested related to the foreclosure fraud crisis than top Wall Street executives. She was answered with a stun gun. The video above shows three large men surrounding Pittman as she tries to cover her face. Abruptly, an officer tasers her, and she crumples to the ground before being hauled off and arrested.

5/20/2013  FBI: Agents died in fall from helicopter off Va. coast
Two members of the FBIs elite counterterrorism unit died Friday while practicing how to quickly drop from a helicopter to a ship using a rope, the FBI announced Monday in a statement. The statement gave few details regarding the deaths of Special Agents Christopher Lorek and Stephen Shaw, other than to say the helicopter encountered unspecified difficulties and the agents fell a significant distance. A law enforcement source told The Pilot the incident happened about 12 nautical miles off the coast of Virginia Beach. The official blamed bad weather for the incident and said the agents members of the FBIs Hostage Rescue Team, based in Quantico fell into the water. The official said he believed the agents died as a result of the impact rather than drowning. Glenn McBride, a spokesman for the state medical examiners office, said it could be months before his staff can release a final cause and manner of death for the two agents. He said they must wait for the results of routine toxicology tests. According to a Navy official, the agents were using a ship the FBI had leased from the Navys Military Sealift Command. No Navy personnel were involved in the exercise, the Navy official said. - Last month, the team was involved in the arrest of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings. And in February, it rescued a 5-year-old boy held hostage for six days in an underground bunker in Alabama.

5/14/2013  This Marijuana Security Firm Struck Gold After Solving One Of The Toughest Problems In Legalization
Canna Security America, led by Dan Williams, might be the furthest thing you think of when you hear the term "marijuana business." For years, Williams and his partners worked for Envision, a firm that created the security systems at places as mundane as Chipotle Mexican Grill. But after striking off on their own, Williams and his partners have become the go-to firm for the installation of security systems in marijuana dispensaries across Colorado. The firm is so good that state legislators writing up regulations for the marijuana business asked Williams and his associates to weigh in on what a pot shop really needs to remain secure. Security is one of the most crucial pieces of the marijuana industry puzzle. Legalization can only work if the business becomes legitimized and the product is removed from the black market trade. So without top-tier security systems at every stage of the process, the entire legalization process could break down.

5/13/2013  Manufacturing the Deadhead: A product of social engineering
In 2012 Jan Irvin made an important discovery. In the course of re-publishing The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross by the Dead Sea Scrolls scholar John Allegro,[1] Irvin had been researching the letters of one of Allegros most prominent critics, Gordon Wasson, at various university archives (including Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, and the Hoover Institute at Stanford) when he came across primary documentsletters actually written by Wassonshowing that he had worked with the CIA.[2] Though Gordon Wasson was both chairman for the Council on Foreign Relations and the Vice President of Public Relations for J.P. Morgan Bank, he is most famous as the individual who discovered, or more accurately popularized, magic mushrooms. An article in Life magazine described fantastic visions and experiences Wasson claimed to have had while under their influence (see Life, May 13, 1957 Seeking the Magic Mushroom). Wassons claims were the first description of the effects of psilocybin (magic) mushrooms presented to the general public. Irvin saw troubling implications in his discovery. He was aware, of course, of the CIAs infamous Project MK-ULTRA, in which the organization had given LSD to unsuspecting U.S. citizens. He also knew of the many conspiracy theories claiming that the government has been somehow involved with the creation of the drug culture. He was also aware of Dave McGowans research on the drug and music movement that had come out of Laurel Canyon in the 1960s, which showed that many of the rock idols who created it were the children of members of military intelligence.[3] So the fact that a member of the CIA had also been involved with the discovery of Psilocybe mushrooms fit into a large collection of troubling linkages between the American government and the drug culture that emerged during the 1960s. Irvin decided to do further research into the governments involvement with the psychedelic movement. An obvious question he hoped to answer was: Had Wasson been somehow involved with MK-ULTRA? During this research, Irvin came in contact with another scholar, Joe Atwill, author of Caesars Messiah: The Roman Conspiracy to Invent Jesus. Atwills research into the origins of Christianity had led him to conclude that Rome had invented the religion. Further, he believed that the Caesars had deliberately brought about the Dark Ages. They had used Christianity as a mind control device to give slavery a religious context intended to make it difficult for serfs to rebel. Like Irvin, Atwill had become suspicious of the U.S. governments many connections to the psychedelic movement, which reminded him of the Caesars intellectual debasing of their population to help bring on the Dark Ages.

5/12/2013  Mini Bilderberg? Bill Gates, Bloomberg, and World's Richest Meeting on Gated SC Island
Has the Bilderberg meeting become too mainstream for some of the worlds richest elite? From Warren Buffet and Monsanto-linked Bill Gates to Oprah and Jeb Bush, the local media has begun reporting on a closed doors meeting between billionaires and politicians at the gated beach island of Kiawah, South Carolina. The Bilderberg group, which consists of a larger group of the worlds top leaders and billionaires, is reportedly set to take place near Watford this year in the United Kingdom. Called The Masters of the Univserse by an Asia Times article, and deemed to be a meeting of 130 top military, business, and political figures by WikiLeaks, the Bilderberg group and its attendees have been getting much more press than usual these past years thanks to activists who have been protesting the meetings. Even Russia Today went and covered the Bilderberg group protests and the meeting itself, reporting that the group could be deciding major events to come in their yearly meetings. From which candidates to run for the next political election, to military action any number of major decisions are likely being made during the Bilderberg group meetings that are conducted entirely in secret. In fact, heavily armed security ensures that no one even gets close enough to take a peek. But whats going on with the latest confab between power and money over on Kiawah Island?

5/7/2013  Gun Homicide Rate Down 49% Since 1993 Peak; Public Unaware -- Pace of Decline Slows in Past Decade
National rates of gun homicide and other violent gun crimes are strikingly lower now than during their peak in the mid-1990s, paralleling a general decline in violent crime, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of government data. Beneath the long-term trend, though, are big differences by decade: Violence plunged through the 1990s, but has declined less dramatically since 2000. Compared with 1993, the peak of U.S. gun homicides, the firearm homicide rate was 49% lower in 2010, and there were fewer deaths, even though the nations population grew. The victimization rate for other violent crimes with a firearmassaults, robberies and sex crimeswas 75% lower in 2011 than in 1993. Violent non-fatal crime victimization overall (with or without a firearm) also is down markedly (72%) over two decades. Nearly all the decline in the firearm homicide rate took place in the 1990s; the downward trend stopped in 2001 and resumed slowly in 2007. The victimization rate for other gun crimes plunged in the 1990s, then declined more slowly from 2000 to 2008. The rate appears to be higher in 2011 compared with 2008, but the increase is not statistically significant. Violent non-fatal crime victimization overall also dropped in the 1990s before declining more slowly from 2000 to 2010, then ticked up in 2011. Despite national attention to the issue of firearm violence, most Americans are unaware that gun crime is lower today than it was two decades ago. According to a new Pew Research Center survey, today 56% of Americans believe gun crime is higher than 20 years ago and only 12% think it is lower.

4/27/2013  Former CIA officer: 'Absurd' to link uncle of Boston suspects, Agency
Retired CIA officer Graham Fuller confirmed to Al-Monitor Saturday that his daughter was previously married to an uncle of the suspects in the Boston Marathon attacks, but called rumors of any links between the uncle and the Agency "absurd." Graham Fuller's daughter, Samantha A. Fuller, was married to Ruslan Tsarnaev (now Tsarni) in the mid-1990s, and divorced in 1999, according to North Carolina public records. The elder Fuller had retired from the agency almost a decade before the brief marriage. "Samantha was married to Ruslan Tsarnaev (Tsarni) for 3-4 years, and they lived in Bishkek for one year where Samantha was working for Price Waterhouse on privatization projects," Fulller, a former CIA officer in Turkey and vice chairman of the National Intelligence Council, told Al-Monitor by email Saturday. "They also lived in our house in [Maryland] for a year or so and they were divorced in 1999, I believe." "I, of course, retired from CIA in 1987 and had moved on to working as a senior political scientist for RAND," Fuller continued.

The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated him and his brother to carry out the attack, according to U.S. officials familiar with the interviews. From his hospital bed, where he is now listed in fair condition, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. The first successful large-scale bombing in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era, the Boston attack killed three people and wounded more than 250 others. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist organization. Rather, the officials said, the evidence so far suggests they were self-radicalized through Internet sites and U.S. actions in the Muslim world. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has specifically cited the U.S. war in Iraq, which ended in December 2011 with the removal of the last American forces, and the war in Afghanistan, where President Obama plans to end combat operations by the end of 2014. Obama has made repairing U.S. relations with the Islamic world a foreign policy priority, even as he has expanded drone operations in Pakistan and other countries, which has inflamed Muslim public opinion.

4/23/2013  Chambliss: Law enforcement agency may have had info about Boston bombing in advance
Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss told Channel 2 Action News late Tuesday afternoon that a law enforcement agency may have had information in advance of the Boston bombings that wasn't properly shared. "There now appears that may have been some evidence that was obtained by one of the law enforcement agencies that did not get shared in a way that it could have been. If that turns out to be the case, then we have to determine whether or not that would have made a difference," Chambliss said. Though Chambliss would not get into specifics on the information or whether or not the bombing could have been prevented, he told Channel 2 Action News that they will find out if someone dropped the ball. "Information sharing between agencies is critical. And we created the Department of Homeland Security to supervise that. We created the National Counter Terrorism Center to be the collection point for all of this information, and we're going to get to the bottom of whether or not somebody along the way dropped the ball on some information and did not share it in a way that it should have been shared."

4/23/2013  Drone War Terrorizes Yemenis, Expert Tells Senate Committee ~ 'Orwellian' is an apt description of the Obama administration's targeted killing program, says Georgetown law professor
The Obama administrations drone war in Yemen terrorizes the local population, kills civilians regularly, and helps al-Qaeda recruit new members by sowing anti-American sentiment, according to testimony from a Yemeni activist in a Senate hearing on Tuesday. Just six days ago, my village was struck by a drone, in an attack that terrified thousands of simple, poor farmers, Farea Al-Muslimi told the Senate Judiciary Committee in a hearing on the legality of the drone war. The drone strike and its impact tore my heart, much as the tragic bombings in Boston last week tore your hearts and also mine.

4/23/2013  EXCLUSIVE: Chinese carjack victim of Boston bombers only escaped when they stopped for Red Bull... and they didn't kill him because he 'wasn't American'
Man carjacked by Boston bombing suspects says he was able to escape after Dzhokhar ~ Tsarnaev went into a store for Red Bull and chocolate bars ~ The victim, a Chinese man in his early 20s, ran to a gas station nearby, where he was told a cashier that his captors had a bomb and guns - A man taken hostage by the alleged Boston bombers after he was car jacked was able to escape after they stopped to buy cans of Red Bull at a gas station, MailOnline can reveal. The carjacking victim, whose name has not been revealed, has told authorities that being Chinese almost certainly saved his life, saying that the brothers told him they would not kill him because he was 'not American.' The victim was able to jump out of the car and flee while Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, looked to buy cans of the energy drink and chocolate bars. From interviews with the staff at both gas stations and court records, MailOnline has been able to piece together the frantic events of the early hours of last Friday. The terrifying sequence of events began when Tamerlan carjacked a Mercedes SUV car at gun point barely 40 minutes after MIT campus police officer Sean Collier was killed as he sat in his patrol car. Tamerlan jumped into the passenger seat of the Mercedes and told the driver: 'Did you hear about the Boston explosion... I did that.'

It appears Goldman (together with virtually everyone else focused on physical not paper gold) has bought enough gold from its clients. Now, there is only upside. Goldie on gold: We closed our short trading recommendation on gold We have closed our recommendation to short COMEX Gold, as prices moved above the stop at $1,400/toz. We have exited the trade significantly below our original target of $1,450/toz, for a potential gain of 10.4%. The move since initiation was surprisingly rapid, likely exacerbated by the break of well-flagged technical support levels.

4/23/2013  Police probing Boston bomber's involvement in murder of close friend, two Jews ~ Slain Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev's best friend was killed along with Brandeis University graduate and devout Jew. The murderer was never found.
Police in a Boston suburb are investigating whether slain Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev was involved in the unsolved murders of his close friend and two other men, one of whom was a Brandeis University graduate and the other a devout Jew. Tsarnaev, who was killed in a shootout with police, was a close friend of Brendan Mess, who was found murdered in an apartment in Waltham, Mass. on Sept. 12, 2011, along with Erik Weissman and Raphael Teken. Weissman was a devoted member of his synagogue, according to WCVB in Boston and Teken had majored in history at predominantly Jewish Brandeis. The triple murder was originally considered to be drug related because the mens bodies were found covered with marijuana. The crime was particularly brutal and all three victims thoats were slashed.

4/23/2013  Police State on Display
The Boston Marathon bombing has already demonstrated the best and the worst of America for all the world to see. First, lets talk about the best. When the bombs detonated, despite the shock and the horror of the blown-off legs and arms, and the blood on street and sidewalk, and without knowing what else might be coming, ordinary citizens jumped into action to try and help the gravely wounded and the dying. Average people with no experience in this kind of mayhem stepped up without hesitation to care for strangers, applying tourniquets, carrying people who couldnt walk to hospital tents, or just holding a hand and calling for help. People pored over their cellphone photo records and camera files, looking for photos that could help identify the killers. Without their volunteer actions, the police and federal agencies would have had no clue who they were looking for. With them, it was quick work pinpointing and identifying the two men who appear to have placed the two bombs. Later, while police failed to catch one of the brothers suspected of having been a bomber, despite placing all of metropolitan Boston under a kind of martial law, it was a citizen who, after the so-called lock-down of the city had been lifted, spotted the suspect and alerted police. Now for the worst. Lets start with the martial law. Okay, it wasnt a declaration, but with police and the Mayor ordering everyone in Boston and its suburbs to stay inside and lock their doors, answering only to police, it was virtually the same thing.

4/23/2013  Suspects Roused by Jihadist Thought ~ Brother Says They Were Motivated by Muslim Anger at U.S.; Fireworks May Be Source of Explosives
The investigation into the Boston Marathon bombing yielded two revelations Tuesday: The surviving suspect said he and his brother were inspired by jihadists online, and the brothers bought two large pyrotechnic devices that could shed light on how they built their explosives. Authorities have been trying to piece together how and why the brothers accused of the April 15 bombing carried out their plans. In limited communication with federal investigators, including handwritten answers, surviving suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev said he and his older brother acted alone and without the help of any terrorist group, U.S. officials said Tuesday. The two were acting as jihadists, motivated by Muslim religious anger at the U.S., the surviving brother told interrogators, these officials said. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev told investigators that the brothers were self-trained and self-indoctrinated, and were striking back at the U.S. for killing Muslims. His statements and other evidence have led U.S. authorities so far to believe that the bombers weren't part of a larger terror group, though no firm conclusions have been made.

4/22/2013  Dzhokhar Tsarnaevs Mom Spoke To Tamerlan Before Deadly MIT Shootout
The mother of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Zubeidat Tsarnaev, spoke to her deceased elder son as the deadly standoff at MIT escalated Thursday night and explains what her older child said before he died in a hail of bullets in a tense confrontation with police. Zubeidat Tsarnaev believes her sons are innocent and have been set up as culprits in the Boston Marathon bombings last week, the distraught and grieving Zubeidat claimed that her elder son had a working relationship with the FBI. She said during an initial interview: Being a mother, what I can say is that I am very sure, I am like 100 percent sure, that is is a setup. My two sons are really innocent, and I know that neither of them never, never has talked about whatever they are saying about [them] now My son would never do this. It is a setup. He was controlled by FBI like for three, five years. They knew what my son was doing. [...] they were controlling every step of him. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who died in the MIT shootout, and brother Dzhokhar, who was gravely injured, are accused of a horrific crime and a potential anti-US campaign of attack but when listening to Zubeidat speak, its difficult not to identify to some small degree with the pain of a mother whose sons are at the center of the mayhem.

4/22/2013  EXCLUSIVE: Did 'controlling' mother of Boston 'bombers' lead them on the path to radicalization? Uncle claims she allowed hardline cleric to preach to boys at their kitchen table
Accused bombers introduced to hardline Islamic views by their mother, an uncle tells MailOnline ~ Firebrand cleric was able to preach at the family's kitchen table ~ Their mother, Zubeidat, described as the 'boss' of the family ~ 'One of the biggest causes is her,' the uncle says of the brothers' beliefs in radical Islam - The two men who allegedly carried out the Boston Marathon bombing were failed by their parents, especially their controlling mother who encouraged their move towards Islamic radicalization, relatives told MailOnline today. Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaeva looked up to mother Zubeidat as an angel but, according to one of their uncles, she was the one who allowed them to be introduced to hardline Islamic views. Ruslan Tsarni claimed that Zubeidat allowed a firebrand cleric into their house to give one-on-one sermons to Tamerlan over the kitchen table during which he claimed he could talk to demons and perform exorcisms. Family friends also told MailOnline that the boys father Anzor never stood up to his wife and revealed that she was the boss of their house. Until now Tamerlan has been blamed for leading his sweet, innocent younger brother down the path to radicalism that allegedly ended with them killing three people and injuring 170 at the Boston Marathon last Monday.

4/22/2013  Flights are delayed at major East Coast airports as sequester-related furloughs begin
After months of inside-the-Beltway drama, the impact of sequestration cutbacks moved to center stage America on Monday as the aviation system was slowed by the furlough of 1,500 air traffic controllers. With about 10 percent of the controllers who direct 23,000 planes a day scheduled to be off daily until October, both industry and government officials forecast that the effect would snowball as the nation enters peak travel season. Short on staff and besieged by brisk winds at the three big New York area airports, controllers fell behind by mid-morning Monday and never caught up. The Newark, LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports reported delays of one to three hours.

4/22/2013  Older Boston Suspect Made Two Trips to Dagestan, Visited Radical Mosque, Officials Say
Two years ago, while visiting his family in the Russian region of Dagestan, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the prime suspect in last weeks Boston Marathon bombings, was flagged as a potential extremist by Russian security services. The only evidence they had were his regular visits to a mosque that gets more than its share of attention from police. Since its construction in 2000, the mosques broad, emerald-colored dome has been the center of the regions Salafi community, which adheres to a more orthodox brand of Islam and, over the years, has been a hangout for men killed in shootouts with Russias counterterrorism forces. According to a source close to the Russian security services who specializes in religious radicalism, Tsarnaev attended services at the mosque on Kotrova Street during both of the extended visits he made to Dagestan over the past two years. That is why Russias Federal Security Service, the agency better known as the FSB, sent a warning to the FBI in 2011 to be aware of Tsarnaevs possible links to extremism. In a statement on April 19, the FBI said it had received information from an unidentified foreign government that Tsarnaev was a follower of radical Islam and a strong believer, and that he had changed drastically since 2010 as he prepared to join unspecified underground groups. In response, the FBI said it interviewed Tsarnaev and checked its records for relevant information, but did not find any terrorism activity, domestic or foreign.

4/22/2013  Report: Jordan allows Israel to use its airspace for Syria attack ~ French newspaper Le Figaro says Jordan decided to allow Israel to use its airspace to monitor situation in Syria and attack country's chemical weapons facilities
French newspaper Le Figaro reported Monday that Jordan has decided to allow Israel to use its airspace in order to monitor the situation in Syria and even attack the country's chemical facilities, if the need arose. The French newspaper's website noted two routes to be opened to Israel: a southern route from the Negev and a route via Amman. Opening Jordanian airspace would mean Israel can avoid flying over southern Lebanon. Two people were reportedly killed and five were wounded in the alleged attack on the site in Jamraya, which Syria described as one of a number of "scientific research centers aimed at raising the level of resistance and self-defense."

4/22/2013  Tamerlan Tsarnaev: FBI denies mother Zubeidat Tsarnaev's claims they tracked elder bombing suspect
The FBI has flatly rejected an assertion by the mother of the two suspected Boston bombers that the bureau had been tracking her oldest son and had spoken with him last week after the deadly marathon bombing. The chief spokesman for the FBI, Mike Kortan, said he continues to stand by an FBI statement issued Friday that said that the only communication the FBI ever had with Tamerlan Tsarnaev was an interview agents conducted with him in 2011 at the urging of a foreign government, since identified as Russia. Zubeidat Tsarnaev, the mother of the suspected bombers, told reporters the FBI had tracked her oldest son for as long as five years. The FBI on Sunday referred again to the previous statement that agents did not know the identities of alleged bombers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev until Friday.

4/22/2013  Turn to Religion Split Suspects' Home
After last week's Boston Marathon bombings, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva phoned her son Tamerlan in Massachusetts to make sure he was safe. "Mama, why are you worrying?" Tamerlan replied from Boston, laughing. Days later, it was the son who phoned his mother. The two, in recent years, had shared a powerful transformation to a more intense brand of Islam. A turn toward radical Islam by Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bombing suspect killed by police, forced a split in the family and shattered his relationship with his parents. Jennifer Smith and Alan Cullison explain. Photo: AP Images. "The police, they have started shooting at us, they are chasing us," Mrs. Tsarnaeva says Tamerlan told her. "Mama, I love you." Then the phone went silent.

4/22/2013  Two Are Accused in Canada of Plotting Train Derailment
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Monday announced the arrest of two men who are accused of planning to derail a passenger train in an Al Qaeda-linked plot. The police, saying the investigation was continuing, offered little in the way of details or evidence at a news conference in Toronto. Canadian politicians and government officials were similarly reticent. Assistant Commissioner James Malizia said that the two suspects had received direction and guidance from Al Qaeda elements living in Iran, but that there was no evidence that the effort had been sponsored by the government of Iran. He declined to explain how the link to Al Qaeda had been made. The suspects were identified as Chiheb Esseghaier, 35, who has been living in Montreal, and Raed Jaser, 30, of Toronto. The police said the men were not Canadian citizens, but declined to identify their nationalities or to describe their immigration status in Canada.

A witness to the shootout called into Opie and Anthony and described in details what he saw: The sergeant was yelling Get down, get down! Hes got a bag of grenades! Hes got f**kin grenades! Theres a live ordnance on the streets! Apparently the police engaged in two different gun battles. One on my neighbors side yard, and one right in front of my house.between obviously each brother and different cops. Cops were shooting hundreds of rounds. The older brother got shot out fronthe went down, the cops ran up to him, hit him in the face with a MagLight because he wont stop movin. The told him, dont move, dont moveor were gonna shoot you in the f**king head. They were both over him (two of the police officers) and the SUV came speeding down the street, going like 60-80 miles and hourand the cops jumped right at the nick of time and he f**king ran his brother over. It was a black SUV, it was like 2 in the morning, it was right in front of my house! Saw him get run over, dragged him like 30 feet. He was a mangled mess. His pool of blood is right in front of my pickup. Warning: contains profanity and graphic descriptions.

4/21/2013  'My sons have been framed' ~ mother of Boston bombers refuses to believe they were responsible for carnage
The mother of the Boston Marathon bombers spoke out yesterday to say her sons were innocent despite the dramatic two-day shoot-out and mahunt that had the world holding its breath. Zubeidat Tsarnaev claimed last night that her sons were framed after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was captured by a SWAT team following an hour-long gunfight from his hiding place inside a boat. She said: "I am like 100 per cent sure that this is a set-up. "My two sons are really innocent and I know that neither of them have never talked about whatever they're saying about now." The brothers killed a police officer on Thursday at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then hijacked a car, leading police through the city in a car chase and and shoot-out in which Tamerlan Tsarnaev was fatally wounded. But Zubeidat staunchly denied all of this: "He would never be on the side of Jihad. He would never do this. "My sons are innocent, it is impossible for them to do such things. I am really telling you this is a set-up."

4/21/2013  Back at college, suspect called Boston bombs "crazy": classmate
Working out at the gym at their sleepy New England college, two students chatted about how "crazy" it was that bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon. Three days later, one of them was named a prime suspect. Returning to campus on Sunday after being evacuated on Friday during a massive manhunt for the bombers, students at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth swapped recollections of seeing Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, back in the dorm, at class and in the gym in the aftermath of the bombings. Tsarnaev was working out in the gym from 8 to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, listening to music on his iPod, when he struck up a conversation with fellow sophomore Zach Bettencourt. "It's crazy this is happening now," Bettencourt recalled Tsarnaev telling him when the bombings came up. "This (these bombings) is so easy to do. These tragedies happen all the time in Afghanistan and Iraq."

4/21/2013  Boston bombers: FBI hunting 12-strong terrorist "sleeper cell" linked to brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev ~ Police believe the pair were specially trained to carry out the devastating attack
The FBI was last night hunting a 12-strong terrorist sleeper cell linked to the Boston marathon bomb brothers. Police believe Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were specially trained to carry out the devastating attack. More than 1,000 FBI operatives were last night working to track down the cell and arrested a man and two women 60 miles from Boston in the hours before Dzhokhars dramatic capture after a bloody shootout on Friday. A source close to the investigation said: We have no doubt the brothers were not acting alone. The devices used to detonate the two bombs were highly sophisticated and not the kind of thing people learn from Google. They were too advanced. Someone gave the brothers the skills and it is now our job to find out just who they were. Agents think the sleeper cell has up to a dozen members and has been waiting several years for their day to come. A specialist team of CIA and FBI interrogators was yesterday flown to a Boston hospital to grill wounded Dzhokhar, 19, about the secret group. The University of Massachusetts student was caught on Friday after hiding out in a boat parked in a garden in locked down Watertown the day after a gun battle with police left his 26-year-old brother and a rookie cop dead.

4/21/2013  Details Emerge of Alleged Carjacking by Bomber Suspects
New details emerged Sunday of the accused marathon bombers' alleged theft of a sport-utility vehicle before a chaotic gunfight in the city's suburbs. About 40 minutes after they allegedly shot and killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer in Cambridge, Mass., Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the brothers accused of the bombing, crossed the Charles River into Boston and stole a Mercedes SUV at gunpoint, briefly holding the driver hostage, according to an excerpt from the Cambridge Police Department report filed by the driver and reviewed by The Wall Street Journal. The alleged carjacking occurred at about 11 p.m. in Boston's Brighton neighborhood on Brighton Avenue, said the excerpt, which didn't name the victim. - The victim told police he was driven to a Shell Gas Station on Memorial Drive in Watertown. Inside the car, the brothers "declared to [the victim] that they were the Boston Marathon bombers and would not kill him because he wasn't American," the report said.

4/21/2013  Did the FBI phone Boston suspect before fatal shootout?
The father of the Boston bombing suspects claims to Channel 4 News that the FBI telephoned his elder son after the attack, and prior to a fatal shootout that claimed the life of a police officer. - The father of Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, Anzor, told Channel 4 News that the elder brother had telephoned their mother a few days after the bombings. Mr Tsarnaev was speaking by telephone to Channel 4 News filmmaker Nick Sturdee (pictured below), who is in Makhachkala, Dagestan. The father said Tamerlan contacted his mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, two or three days after the bombing. Tamerlan told her the FBI had just rung him and accused him of being behind the attacks, and that he had responded by saying "that's your problem", Mr Tsarnaev claims. Questions raised The telephone call claim raises a number of questions. On the one hand the claim could be false. It follows suggestions by both parents that the FBI had been monitoring Tamerlan for years and could be part of efforts to defend the brothers. Another possiblity is that the telephone call was Tamerlan preparing his mother for bad news.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is still in the hospital. His condition is not improving, and he still can't speak to investigators because of a potentially self-inflicted neck wound. He was in serious but stable condition Sunday morning, according to the F.B.I., but the Boston Police Department just released an update saying it's been downgraded to critical but stable condition. That's bad. That means his condition is getting worse. The truth is, there's a very real possibility investigators won't get a chance to speak with Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. "We dont know if well ever be able to question the individual," Mayor Tom Menino cautioned Sunday morning on ABC's This Week. - Update, Monday: There are now federal charges, delivered to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev as an American citizen, in his hospital bed (reportedly along with his Miranda warning), and they involve pressure cookers as WMDs, even as questions surround the investigation and his family. 4/21/2013  FBI denies report elder Tsarnaev was contacted last week
The FBI is strongly refuting a report by Britains Channel 4 News that Tamerlan Tsarnaev was contacted by federal agents last week, days after the Marathon bombings and days before he allegedly murdered an MIT police officer and before he was killed in a gunfight with cops and his fugitive brother held Greater Boston hostage for an entire day. Story is false, a spokeswoman for the agency said in an email response to a Herald inquiry.
