7/18/2002  Calm Before the Crash -- Flight 11 Crew Sent Key Details Before Hitting the Twin Towers
"Listen, and listen to me very carefully. I'm on Flight 11. The airplane has been hijacked," said the voice on the other end. The caller was Amy Sweeney, a flight attendant on board American Airlines Flight 11, which had just been hijacked on its way from Boston to Los Angeles. Over the next 25 minutes, Sweeney, a 13-year veteran with the airline, calmly relayed information to Woodward that would later be crucial in helping the FBI identify the men who hijacked the plane and flew it into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Another flight attendant, Betty Ong, who had been with American Airlines for 14 years, also called colleagues on the ground.

Within 24 hours, the city began to make changes, says Greg Schnute, executive vice president at MIT. Instead of hauling debris directly, trucks began moving it to two piers in Manhattan, for transmission by barge and tugboat first to a staging area in Brooklyn, and then from Brooklyn to Fresh Kills.

6/27/2002  Is America a Police State?
Mr. Speaker: Most Americans believe we live in dangerous times, and I must agree. Today I want to talk about how I see those dangers and what Congress ought to do about them. Of course, the Monday-morning quarterbacks are now explaining, with political overtones, what we should have done to prevent the 9/11 tragedy. Unfortunately, in doing so, foreign policy changes are never considered. I have, for more than two decades, been severely critical of our post-World War II foreign policy. I have perceived it to be not in our best interest and have believed that it presented a serious danger to our security. For the record, in January of 2000 I stated the following on this floor: Our commercial interests and foreign policy are no longer bad as it is that average Americans are forced to subsidize such a system, we additionally are placed in greater danger because of our arrogant policy of bombing nations that do not submit to our wishes. This generates hatred directed toward America ...and exposes us to a greater threat of terrorism, since this is the only vehicle our victims can use to retaliate against a powerful military state...the cost in terms of lost liberties and unnecessary exposure to terrorism is difficult to assess, but in time, it will become apparent to all of us that foreign interventionism is of no benefit to American citizens, but instead is a threat to our liberties.

6/21/2002  Air Force officer disciplined for saying Bush allowed September 11 attacks
Hijacker attended US military school - Of course President Bush knew about the impending attacks on America. He did nothing to warn the American people because he needed this war on terrorism. His daddy had Saddam and he needed Osama. His presidency was going nowhere. He wasnt elected by the American people, but placed in the Oval Office by a conservative supreme court. The economy was sliding into the usual Republican pits and he needed something on which to hang his presidency.... This guy is a joke. What is sleazy and contemptible is the President of the United States not telling the American people what he knows for political gain. The letter provoked immediate retaliation against the 24-year Air Force veteran. Butler was transferred from the Monterey installation and threatened with court martial under Article 88 of the military code, which prohibits officers from publicly using contemptuous words against the president and other officials.

6/21/2002  The Doctrine of Odious Debts: Using the Law to Cancel Illegitimate Debts
Just over a year ago, I gave a speech on the international legal doctrine of odious debts to a conference in Jakarta, Indonesia. After my speech, and during the question period, a rather distinguished, elderly man went up to the microphone and he said: "I feel so happy to learn about the Doctrine of Odious Debts. I have always considered myself an honourable person, I take my obligations to repay my debts seriously. And yet I do not feel that I should have to repay my government's debts which did not benefit the Indonesia people, but instead were used by corrupt individuals. So, until now, I have felt this great conflict inside me. My conscience tells me that I would be dishonourable not to repay my country's debts, and yet I don't think it is fair to make me repay them. So I am so happy to learn about the Doctrine of Odious Debts which tells me that I am not a bad person and that I am right. The people of Indonesia, do not have an obligation to repay the debts of our previous government which are odious. And most important, my feeling is based in law." So friends, sit back and listen. If you, like this Indonesian gentleman, have felt great frustration at the fundamental injustice of holding the citizens of Southern countries responsible for the debts of their countries, be prepared to be relieved and to be happy. I will now take you back in time, through a little legal history, to tell you about the Doctrine of Odious Debts.

6/7/2002  Matthew Lesko Appalled Sept. 11 Terrorists Used his Book
Information USA founder Matthew Lesko, author of "Free Money to Change Your Life," is dismayed to learn that some of the Sept. 11 terrorist highjackers used his book in attempting to obtain government loans to underwrite earlier attacks on U.S. targets. "My book is for average American taxpayers. It's disturbing that foreign terrorists know there's government money available but the average citizen doesn't," notes Lesko, the author of more than 100 books on federal money programs. In an exclusive interview with ABC news, USDA loan officer Johnelle Bryant said terrorist ringleader Mohamed Atta told her he had found out about such loans from a book he had seen advertised on television. Although he did not name its author, other details he provided exclude any other possibilities, Lesko says. - "I'm appalled they tried to get taxpayers' money to kill Americans, and outraged that they might have used my book as a reference," says Lesko, whose signature question mark suit and frenetic persona have made him a staple of national talk shows. "Atta thought he could just walk into a loan office and get more than half a million dollars, in cash no less? That shows the arrogance and stupidity of these terrorists. He obviously didn't read it." "When something like this happens to you as an individual you feel tainted," says Lesko. "I'm just glad they didn't get any money. It shows the loan system's safeguards work. I have nothing but the highest respect for loan officer Bryant. She's a hero, and we owe her all the thanks in the world for doing her job. That's what I call a good citizen."

6/6/2002  Transcript of Johnelle Bryant Interview: Excerpts From Government Worker's Interview Recalling Encounter With 9/11 Hijacker
Government loan officer Johnelle Bryant says she was face to face with Mohamed Atta, believed to be the ringleader of the Sept. 11 hijackers, for hours as he requested money apparently intended to finance a terrorist plot. Here are excerpts of Brian Ross' interview with Bryant. JOHNELLE BRYANT: I'm a formal manager at, for a farm service agency. It's a agency, part of the United States Department of Agriculture. And my main office is located in Homestead, Florida. But my servicing area includes: Dade County, Broward County, and Palm Beach County, and, and Monroe County. - BRIAN ROSS: How did he know to come to you for a loan? JOHNELLE BRYANT: Oh. He told me that he had purchased a book from, off the cable TV, that advertised how to get, how to obtain a free grants, or loans from the government. And he had said that he had paid $40 for it. And that it, it explained to him our agency, and our loan limits. Actually we have a guaranteed loan limit of $750,000. And he was asking for $650,000. JOHNELLE BRYANT: He also thought that he, all he had to do to obtain the money, was to actually just come to my office, tell me what he wanted the loan for, and that he would obtain the cash, without any kind of application processing, whatsoever. And he, when I explained to him about the application process, he became very agitated. And he said that that's not what the book said. That the book said that I, I come to your agency and that I could get up to $750,000 in, in loan. And he also thought that the loan was going to be cash. BRIAN ROSS: So he believed the TV commercial. Free money from the government. JOHNELLE BRYANT: He actually believed, yes. He actually believed that he could walk into the office and say that he needed $650,000 to purchase an aircraft with. And that I would give him $650,000 in cash.

5/12/2002  Hallowed Ground -- Nobody asked for this, but as September 11 recedes, a small Pennsylvania town finds itself guardian of an American legend
Wally Miller hits the siren on his dark Ford Excursion. He's alerting the Somerset County sheriffs that he is once again entering the restricted area surrounded by dense forest and enclosed by an eight-foot metal fence. Inside his truck is the familiar stale smell of the wilted flowers that he brings back from the 90 or so funerals he conducts every year. Death has been the family business at Miller Funeral Home in Somerset, Pa., for nearly half a century. Never, though, anything that even remotely resembles this. Before Miller can even unfold his lanky 6-foot-4 body from the vehicle, a deputy sheriff thrusts at him a plastic baggie containing a handful of jagged metallic nuggets, mangled and melted into irregular shapes, little bigger than children's marbles. They are the latest of the shreds to be recovered -- nearly six months later -- of what remains of United Airlines Flight 93. Miller holds up the bag and says that virtually the entire airplane, including its 44 human occupants, disintegrated in similar fashion. "I'm just a hick," Miller says when he considers the enormity of what he does. "I'm a country coroner." He is a youthful 44, with dark hair and a long, angular face that sometimes suggests a young, shaven version of Abe Lincoln. He is quite comfortable talking about death, most of the time. He grew up watching his father, Wilbur, deal with the grief of countless friends and neighbors, and then Wally succeeded Wilbur, both in running the funeral home and becoming Somerset County's elected coroner. So it is with a calm, practiced voice that Miller speaks whenever he escorts grieving family members, as he has again and again and again, up the muddy hillock that overlooks the spot where Flight 93 came to earth. Here on this mound and elsewhere, in hundreds of face-to-face conversations and on the telephone, Miller explains to families from New Jersey to Berkeley to Japan to Germany the grisly calculus of what happened to their loved ones: The Boeing 757 still heavily laden with jet fuel slammed at about 575 mph almost straight down into a rolling patch of grassy land that had long ago been strip-mined for coal. The impact spewed a fireball of horrific force across hundreds of acres of towering hemlocks and other trees, setting many ablaze. The fuselage burrowed straight into the earth so forcefully that one of the "black boxes" was recovered at a depth of 25 feet under the ground.
