Emergency personnel had to be called to the scene of the Dixie Gun and Knife Show in Raleigh, North Carolina after a gun accidentally discharged and shot three people at the show’s safety check-in booth just after 1 pm. Both victims were transported to an area hospital, and the Raleigh Fire Department announced that the show would be closed for the rest of the day. (Think Progress)
Nokia Releases 3D Print Files For Lumia 820 Smartphone. Got A 3D Printer? Custom Print Your Own Removable Shell Now this is cool: mobile maker Nokia has released 3D print files for one of its smartphones so owners of 3D printers can custom print their own removable shell. Nokia already sells different colour shells for the handset in question, the Lumia 820 — which has a removable backplate — along with shells that add wireless charging to the device or offer a bit more protection to standard plastic shells. But the company has decided to spice things up further by releasing a 3D template so people can print their own custom designs.
It's calling this a 3DK for short — see what they did there? Writing in a blog post on Nokia Conversations, Nokia says: "We are going to release 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices — everything someone versed in 3D printing needs to print their own custom Lumia 820 case. Sonoma County leads in 'spare the air' complaints Sonoma County apparently is the biggest wood-burning air polluter in the Bay Area during no-burn days, and this year the regional air quality police is cracking down more than ever.
Last year, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District received 409 wood-burning complaints from Sonoma County neighborhoods. Inspection patrols, many stemming from such complaints, resulted in 110 wood-burning violations, the most of any county in the nine-county district, officials said.

Across the Bay Area district, there were 3,777 complaints and 346 violations, with most violators receiving a warning letter. But this winter, the district is no longer issuing warnings. Architect aims to 3D print an endless house Though 3D printers aren’t exactly a common consumer product, they’ve been on the rise for a few years now. The objects they print are becoming more complex, and more useful — from smartphone cases to working gun parts. Now, dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars plans to build an entire house with a 3D printer, and an “endless” one at that.
Dubbed the Landscape House, Ruijssenaars has designed the building to be “one piece,” which could be a little misleading. Rather than a 3D printer creating a building in one go, separate pieces will be printed out, which will then interlock and create the full structure. Each piece is planned to measure in at 19.6 x 29.5 feet (6 x 9 meters), and printed with the large D-Shape 3D printer, which is said to be able to build full-size sandstone buildings “without human intervention.” Inventor of the D-Shape printer, Enrico Dini, suggested that Ruijssenaars only print out the frame of the building, then fill it with fiber glass and concrete in order to increase the strength of the structure. Culture and Agriculture ~ Sue Spaid looks at farming as art Rirkrit Tiravanija’s “Untitled (bicycle shower),” one of the BMA’s new acquisitions, might seem a bit out of place in the formal halls of the museum. That’s because Tiravanija designed it to actually function as a shower for the land, an experimental art/farming/political compound he founded in Thailand in 1998.
According to Sue Spaid’s new book Green Acres: Artists Farming Fields, Greenhouses and Abandoned Lots, it is becoming increasingly common to see such works at museums. The book accompanies a show at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, which will come to the area this summer, but Spaid will facilitate a conversation about art and farming at Red Emma’s on Friday, Jan. 18.
Before Spaid came to Baltimore to take over the directorship of the Contemporary Museum in 2010—a position she held until the museum suspended operations and let her go last May—she worked as curator at Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center, where she co-curated Ecovention: Current Art to Transform Ecologies, which led, a decade later, to Green Acres. Idle No More protests, blockades spread across country Protests prompted by first-nations frustration with the federal government flared in at least six provinces Wednesday.
The “day of action” began quietly, but by lunchtime police in Windsor blocked one of two access roads to the Ambassador Bridge, which is the major trade crossing from southern Ontario to the United States, as protesters massed. A spokesman said the closing should not last long as natives were soon moving to a nearby parking lot.
A CN rail spokesman confirmed reports that protesters had blocked the main line in Manitoba, near Portage la Prairie. “We have stopped train traffic in the immediate area, and have obtained a court injunction,” Jim Feeny said.

Militants Seize Americans and Other Hostages in Algeria The French military assault on Islamist extremists in Mali escalated into a potentially much broader North African conflict on Wednesday when, in retribution, armed attackers in unmarked trucks seized an internationally managed natural gas field in neighboring Algeria and took at least 20 foreign hostages, including Americans.
Algerian officials said at least two people, including a Briton, were killed in the assault, which began with a predawn ambush on a bus trying to ferry gas-field workers to an airport. Hundreds of Algerian security forces were sent to surround the gas-field compound, creating a tense standoff, and the country’s interior minister said there would be no negotiations.
Algeria’s official news agency said at least 20 fighters had carried out the attack and mass abduction. There were unconfirmed reports late on Wednesday that the security forces had tried to storm the compound and had retreated under gunfire from the hostage takers. (The New York Times)
'Gates of Hell': France upping military presence in Mali conflict France is sending more troops to Mali to fight against al-Qaeda-linked militants. Paris claims the move is short-term, but delays to the deployment of an African security force have raised fears the conflict could spill over into neighboring nations.
The French government issued a statement that it would send 2,500 troops to support Malian government soldiers in the conflict against Islamist rebels. France has already deployed around 750 troops to Mali, and French carriers arrived in Bamako on Tuesday morning .
French president Francois Hollande hailed the latest overnight airstrikes on rebel targets as “achieving their goal,” but said that assembling an African force to reinforce French troops could take a “good week.” (Russia Today)
Burgeoning native protests shake Canadian establishment and official native leadership Idle No More, the burgeoning grassroots native Indian movement, is continuing its campaign of protests against Canada’s Conservative government, which is seeking to pave the way for capitalist resource development by weakening and ultimately extinguishing collective native land rights. Marches, flash mobs, round dances and rallies were held this past weekend in dozens of cities from coast to coast, as well as on the many aboriginal reservations located in more isolated parts of the country.
In addition, First Nations chiefs from Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba have called for a day of action this Wednesday, including a stepped-up campaign of road and rail blockades. In previous weeks, aboriginals and their supporters have blocked international bridge and border crossings, strategic rail lines and major highways nation-wide, as well as mining and logging roads in Canada’s north. For their own part, Idle No More leaders have called for a global Day of Action on January 28.
The escalation of Idle No More’s fight against chronic native poverty, inequality, the abrogation of treaty rights and environmental degradation comes in the wake of a series of events last week that have brought to the fore issues surrounding the historic oppression and dispossession of Canada’s native peoples, a renewed push by big business to develop huge northern fossil fuel and mineral deposits, and the growing social stratification amongst the native population itself. Feds won't stop targeting medpot outlets Though San Diego Mayor Bob Filner has ordered city officials to stop targeting medical marijuana outlets for prosecution and code compliance, don’t expect federal authorities to take the same position.
U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy said Tuesday that while she is open to meeting with the new mayor on the subject, selling marijuana remains illegal under federal law.
“I take my guidance from the attorney general of the U.S., and he from the president,” Duffy said during an interview with the U-T San Diego editorial board. “And thus far, that direction is, we are going to enforce the Controlled Substances Act.”
That law classifies marijuana as an illegal drug.
Duffy’s comments came five days after Filner ordered city code enforcement officers to halt actions against medical marijuana dispensaries and for police to stop referring such cases to city prosecutors. (San Diego Union-Tribune)

NBC Admitted: No 'Assault Rifle' Used in Newtown Shooting When the president surrounds himself with children while giving his announcement that reasonable gun control measures are necessary, bear in mind that those ‘assault rifles‘ the government is sure to be going after were not even used in the Newton, Connecticut elementary shooting. As NBC admits in the video above, four handguns were used to carry out that despicable atrocity. This directly contradicts other reports.

Panetta: No US Troops to Mali U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the United States is not considering sending ground troops to Mali to work with French forces that began an assault on militant Islamist rebels in the country last Friday. But during a visit to Portugal he said the U.S. military will help the French in other ways.
Panetta commended France for sending troops to try to prevent al-Qaida's North African affiliate from establishing a base of operations in Mali. But he indicated there is a limit to the help the United States will provide.
"There is no consideration of putting any American boots on the ground at this time," said Panetta.

Native rights protest draws thousands in Canada Thousands of people have held a protest rally in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta to show their support for the rights of indigenous people in the country.
Chanting slogans and hitting drums, the protesters packed into West Edmonton Mall late Sunday to signal that they would continue protests in solidarity with the native rights movement "Idle No More".
Organizers of the rally said that more than 2,500 people participated in the protest.
"It's beautiful. It's a way for us to showcase our traditions, and our spirituality and our realities to the rest of people who occupy what is now Canada," said Quetzala Carson, a Native Studies student at the University of Alberta. (Press TV)

Prosecutors claim that Mohamed Mohamud, now 21, planned to wage violent jihad in the United States.
Mohamud's attorneys claim he was an impressionable and conflicted teen-ager who was provoked into the plot by undercover FBI agents.

Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Nigeria agreed on Saturday to send soldiers, a day after France authorised air strikes, dispatching fighter jets from neighbouring Chad and bombing rebel positions north of Mopti, the last Malian government-controlled town in the north.

Obama's 'kill list' critic found dead in New York City Prominent American blogger and computer prodigy Aaron Swartz, who spoke against US President Barack Obama's "kill list"ť and cyber attacks against Iran, has been found dead in New York.
Police found the body of the 26-year-old in his apartment in New York City borough of Brooklyn on Friday, said a spokeswoman for the city's chief medical examiner.
Brooklyn's chief medical examiner ruled the death a suicide by hanging, but no further detail is available about the mysterious death.
Last year, Swartz openly criticized the US and the Israeli regime for launching joint cyber attacks against Iran.
The blogger was also vocal in criticizing Obama's so-called kill list and other policies.
Obama has been reportedly approving the names put on the "kill lists"ť used in the targeted killing operations carried out by US assassination drones. (Press TV)
Sweeping new gun laws proposed by influential liberal think tank With President Obama readying an overhaul of the nation’s gun laws, a liberal think tank with singular influence throughout his administration is pushing for a sweeping agenda of strict new restrictions on and federal oversight of gun and ammunition sales.
The Center for American Progress is recommending 13 new gun policies to the White House — some of them executive actions that would not require the approval of Congress — in what amounts to the progressive community’s wish list.
CAP’s proposals — which include requiring universal background checks, banning military-grade assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and modernizing data systems to track gun sales and enforce existing laws — are all but certain to face stiff opposition from the National Rifle Association and its many allies in Congress. California school practiced new lockdown drill minutes before shooting Minutes before a gunman walked into a California high school, students and teachers had been practicing what to do if the school came under an attack.
"Just 10 minutes before it happened, our teachers were giving us protocol because of what happened in Connecticut," Oscar Nuno, a student at Taft High School said.
A 16-year-old student armed with a shotgun walked into his first period science class Thursday and opened fire, wounding a classmate he claimed had bulled him. Video surveillance shows the suspect entering the building through a side door.
He fired two more rounds at students, reportedly missing a second target, as they fled the class, and then faced a well-liked teacher Ryan Heber, MyFoxLA.com reported.
"I don't want to shoot you," he told Heber as the teacher tried to convince the student to put down the gun.
Police credit Heber with causing enough of a distraction to allow a majority of the students to escape the classroom through a back door unharmed. (Fox)
City works on code change for controversial vegetable garden ~ Helvengstons protest Orlando's law despite proposal The city of Orlando says it's trying to work with the couple whose front yard vegetable garden has sparked controversy nationwide by passing new regulations that would require changes to their garden, a move that would affect several others in College Park.
In November, Local 6 first reported the story about the controversial garden after the city told the Helvengstons their 25-by-25-foot garden was not in compliance with the city's code.
The city had asked the couple to uproot it because it was against the landscaping code that requires permanent maintained ground cover with a finished appearance. The city threatened to fine Jennifer and Jason Helvengston $500 per day. Since then, however, the city has dropped the violation and is working to change the code itself.
"We reached out to the community, talked to landscape architects, we looked at what other cities are doing," said Jonathan Ippel, sustainability director of the city of Orlando. "We're trying to be flexible and provide a variety of different options." (Click Orlando)
Tucson Gets State's First Cannabis Kitchen State inspectors gave the nod in Tucson on Thursday to the state's first commercial cannabis kitchen, Heavenly Harvest, where staff were making cannabis butter, stuffing ovens and mixing spices to bring their edibles to Green Halo dispensary patients as soon as possible.
"We expect to have a full line of edibles out by Saturday," said Heather Manus, the registered nurse who manages the non-profit associated with the Green Halo dispensary. Both are at 7710 S. Wilmot Road, just off Interstate 10. (Tuscon Weekly)

Filner halts medpot crackdown -- Federal crackdown not affected by mayor's action Mayor Bob Filner ordered a halt Thursday to the prosecution of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city, using his power as strong mayor to direct police and code compliance officers to stop targeting the pot shops.
The decision came two days after Filner spoke before the San Diego chapter of Americans for Safe Access, an advocacy group for medical marijuana. Filner criticized law enforcement’s crackdown on dispensaries and identified City Attorney Jan Goldsmith as an official that “has not been, what shall I say, very helpful.” He promised the group he would talk to the police chief, noting he could hire or fire him, and intimidate Goldsmith into backing off.
Goldsmith responded Wednesday with a letter to Filner that “you could have achieved your goal in less than 30 seconds.” The mayor has sole authority over civil actions against dispensaries because they involved code-enforcement violations, which are under his purview, the city attorney explained. Self-professed 'gun nut' Keith Ratliff found fatally shot in the head in suspected homicide 'Every one of you should be able to own an assault weapon of your choice,' Ratliff posted last year on YouTube. Ratliff was a channel producer for the FPSRussia, one of the top 10 most popular channels on YouTube. The channel features a man in Russian accent test firing various assault weapons and has 3.4 million subscribers. - In a rather macabre bit of irony, a self-professed "gun nut" who was a YouTube channel producer for fellow gun enthusiasts was found fatally shot in the head in his Carnesville, Ga., home on Jan. 3. Police are investigating the case as a homicide.
Keith Ratliff, 32, was a channel producer for the popular FPSRussia firearms channel on YouTube, according to FoxNews.com. The channel boasts 3.4 million subscribers and has more than 537 million video views. The videos largely consist of a man with a Russian accent test firing various high-powered firearms. The channel is ranked as one of the top 10 channels on YouTube.
Police found numerous weapons at the crime scene, according to WSB-TV. Some of the weapons were even manufactured by Ratliff himself. "He (Ratliff) did sustain a gunshot wound that was not self-inflicted,” Mike Ayers of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told FoxNews.com. (New York Daily News)

Professor won't back down from Newtown massacre conspiracy theory A media professor at Florida Atlantic University who is questioning the Sandy Hook massacre has caused controversy with his conspiracy claims.
James Tracy, who writes a personal blog about conspiracy theories, believes the events that unfolded at Sandy Hook did not happen as reported.
The professor writes on his blog, Memory Hole, “While it sounds like an outrageous claim, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place—at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the nation’s news media have described.” He suggests that there were multiple shooters and that the number of dead is incorrect. The blog post was published on the Global Research site, where it caught the attention of the Web. (Yahoo News)
Supervisors change minds, keep TSA screeners at Sacramento airport In an abrupt about-face, Sacramento County has backed away from a controversial plan to jettison its federal airport screeners and replace them with private security company employees.
In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors decided to withdraw the county's federal request to be allowed to use private screeners at checkpoints in Terminals A and B instead of federal Transportation Security Administration employees.
Until Tuesday, Sacramento had been on track to become the third major airport in the country to participate in a federal opt-out program that would turn checkpoint security over to the private sector. Federal officials were poised to solicit applications from security companies for the Sacramento contract later this month.
The county reversal came amid lobbying from airline flight attendants, local union representatives and other local leaders, including Sacramento Assemblymen Roger Dickinson and Richard Pan – all urging them to stick with TSA. (Sacramento Bee)

Keith Ratliff, who was a business partner at FPSRussia, YouTube's ninth most popular channel with more than three million active subscribers and a combined half billion views, was discovered on a rural road in Carnesville, Georgia.

Police Stop-and-Frisk Program in Bronx Is Ruled Unconstitutional An element of the New York Police Department’s stop-and-frisk practice was deemed unconstitutional by a federal judge on Tuesday, a ruling that may have broad implications for the city’s widespread use of police stops as a crime-fighting tactic.
The decision, the first federal ruling to find that the practice under the Bloomberg administration violates the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure, focused on police stops conducted in front of several thousand private residential buildings in the Bronx enrolled in the Trespass Affidavit Program. Property managers in that program have asked the police to patrol their buildings and to arrest trespassers.

John Noveske Killed in Car Crash Oregon State Police (OSP) Sergeant Tyler Lee reports that on January 4, 2013 at approximately 9:13 p.m., a 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser driven by John Noveske, age 36, from Grants Pass, was westbound on Highway 260 near El Camino Way. As the vehicle negotiated a right curve, it traveled across the oncoming lane onto the dirt highway shoulder until it struck two large boulders. The vehicle rolled and Mr. Noveske was ejected.

Legal sale of medical marijuana coming soon to DC Occupying a distinguished-looking bright blue store front on North Capitol Street just off New York Avenue is a company called Capital City Care.
It is getting ready to open its doors in a matter of weeks. Capital City Care should be the first of four businesses in the city to begin legally selling marijuana.
"Some of them will be open by early spring and the rest of them will be opening throughout the rest of the year," says Morgan Fox of the D.C.-based Marijuana Policy Project. "Qualified patients who have a doctor's recommendation will be able to purchase marijuana from these stores and take it directly home and use it in their homes."

Menino: Veep promised him fast action on gun control Vice President Joe Biden “guaranteed” Mayor Thomas M. Menino — a leading national gun control advocate — that President Obama will pass sweeping firearms reforms by the end of the month, the mayor said today.
“He said, ‘Tommy, I guarantee you, we’ll get it done by the end of January,’” Menino said at City Hall today. “They’re going to get it done.”
The mayor, who has been recovering from a host of ailments for the past two months, said Biden called him several times while he was in the hospital, including a call after the Newtown school massacre to discuss gun control.
Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg co-chair the 500-mayor-strong Mayors Against Illegal Guns and have called for national gun reform in the wake of last month’s Sandy Hook school killings. (Boston Herald)
Nurses Fired for Refusing Flu Shot An Indiana hospital has fired eight employees, including at least three veteran nurses, after they refused mandatory flu shots, stirring up controversy over which should come first: employee rights or patient safety. The hospital imposed mandatory vaccines, responding to rising concerns about the spread of influenza.
Ethel Hoover wore all black on her last day of work as a nurse in the critical care unit at Indiana University Health Goshen Hospital. She said she was in "mourning" because she would have been at the hospital 22 years in February, and she's only called out of work four or five times in her whole career , she said.
"This is my body. I have a right to refuse the flu vaccine," Hoover, 61, told ABCNews.com. "For 21 years, I have religiously not taken the flu vaccine, and now you're telling me that I believe in it."
More than 15,100 flu cases have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since Sept. 30, including 16 pediatric deaths. Indiana's flu activity level is considered high, according to the CDC, which last month announced that the flu season came a month earlier than usual. (ABC)
Print Giant 3D Systems to Acquire Modeling Company Geomagic 3D Systems, one of the largest manufacturers of 3-D printers, announced today the purchase of modeling software company Geomagic, a move that will allow the South Carolina-based company to further expand into applications.
Throughout a strong showing for investors in 2012, 3D Systems has been on a purchasing binge, according to Investor’s Business Daily, nabbing INUS Technology, Vitzu Technologies, Bespoke Innovations, and others. Geomagic’s CEO Ping Fu will join 3D Systems as Chief Strategy Officer. (Wired)
What it'll be like to buy medical marijuana in D.C. Medical marijuana will go on sale in the District in March, but patients in need of its painkilling qualities can begin visiting Capital City Care dispensary next month.
The facility, located in a townhouse in the 1300 block of N. Capitol Street, will be the first of five dispensaries to open to the public.
David Guard, general manager of Capital City Care says only qualified patients -- those with cards from the D.C. Department of Health saying they they suffer from HIV/AIDS, cancer, glaucoma, and severe muscle spasm conditions like multiple sclerosis -- will be allowed to purchase the pot. (WTOP)

The San Antonio Theater Shooting the National Media Ignored At approximately 9:25 p.m. on Sunday night, December 16, just two days after the horrific shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, Jesus Manuel Garcia, age 19, entered the China Garden restaurant across the mall from the Santikos Mayan Palace 14 theater complex in San Antonio, Texas, looking for his ex-girlfriend. Angered that she had just broken up with him, he sent her a text message saying that he planned to go to the restaurant where she worked and “shoot somebody.”
Before she could warn patrons at the restaurant Garcia entered and started shooting. One bullet slightly wounded one patron while others scattered out the exit doors and headed for the safety of the theater lobby across the mall. Garcia chased them and continued shooting.
This got the attention of an armed off-duty law-enforcement officer who was working at the theater, Bexar County sheriff’s Sgt. Lisa Castellano, who chased Garcia to the back of the theater where he ducked into the men’s room. When he emerged, Castellano shot him four times which immediately and effectively ended the threat. Garcia was handcuffed with the help of another off-duty officer and taken to the hospital where he was listed in stable condition. He was charged with attempted capital murder of a police officer and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set at $1 million. (The New American)
